 TEXTUAL QUESTIONS

Q.1: Give a brief character portrayal of Aunty Roopwati.

Ans: Aunty Roopwati was a woman of captivating beauty. Lovers and admirers, both young and old swamed around her during her hey days. She created quite a flutter in the hearts of the young and energetic men of her days. She was now in her seventies, but she still bragged about her past. She recounted that almost every eligible young leader of her time wanted to court her and take her as wife. Roopwati was a smart and dashing woman, and a fluent speaker as well. She was endowed with a rich assortment of virtues, and every one thought that she was destined to conquer great heights of glory. She herself had neither any doubt nor any false humility about that fact and thought no position was too high for her. But she had the wrong habit of extolling herself, which was disliked by her colleagues in politics. At seventy too, Aunty Roopwati had enough bloom left in her cheeks to give the impression of blushing while reminiscing about the wonderful days when modernity for woman meant traveling in a rikshwa with her husband. Aunty Roopwati came of a well-known family and was a graduate. She also claimed that she could even sing like a shehnai. She also referred to a number of poems that had be come immortal in our literature saying that their poets, who had been her contemporaries, had composed them for the sole satisfaction of having them sung or recited by her. Aunty Roopwati always bragged about her admirers and narrated various anecdotes related to her former admirers. Even in her old age, Aunty Roopwati had a soft corner for a lone gentleman Chinmoy Babu, who was in politics and had been quite a talented young man during the freedom struggle. She showed her affection for him openly, while he often ignored her. She even spread a rumour of Chinmoy Babu holding her hands in the dark. And it proved to be wrong. She could not bear this and was broken herted this led to her death.

Q.2: Chinmoy Babu was looked upon as a man above the propensities of an ordinary mortal. Elucidate.

Ans: Chinmoy Babu was different from all other men in all respects. He had a promising future as an artist and a classical singer. and had published a couple of books on literary and cultural topics. His writings had imprint of originality. He was very reserved and humble and only those who came in close contact with him knew that apart from being talented, he was quite intelligent too. He had mad more sacrifices for the freedom struggle than anyone else, but he hardly commanded any influence in the party. He was shy and re mained aloof. But a time came when people began to get disillusioned with their loudmouthed leaders and the party realized its need to resurrect some ignored heroes of past days, some old freedom fighters This made it possible for Chinmoy Babu to emerge from oblivion, and thus he became the mayor, uncontested. Chinmoy Babu was looked upon as a man above the propersities of an ordinary man. He symbolized a new hope. Chinmoy Babu was a person free from corruption. A time had come when a floor crossing by a group of members of the legislature brought the state ministry crashing down. Chinmoy Babu had already been caught in the maelstrom of politics. His reputation as an incorruptible leader proved to be the only hope for his party to return back to power. Chinmoy Babu was sure of victory, with lots of well-wishers to join him. Thus, when Aunty Roopwati told everyone and spread the reumour of the reserved and shy Chinmoy Babu holding her hand in the dark, no one wanted to believe that, and moreover everyone felt that it was a story of the long past, which hardly had any relation to the present situation. It could not be a hurdle on Chinmoy Babu's path to victory as Chief Minister.

Q.3: Did Chinmoy Babu really care for Aunty Roopwatl Give a reasoned answer.

Ans: From the end of the stóry it seems that Chinmoy did a for Aunty Roopwati.

It has already been told by Aunty Roopwati that Chinmoy Bab had been one of her admirers in her hey days. And even though 1at Chinmoy Babu felt uncomfortable when Aunty Roopwati open expressed her liking for Chinmoy Babu. It seemed he cared for no because when she met her death because of pneumonia Chinmo Babu really felt very sad. He knonw that she was not able to take the fact of being proved wrong about the instance when she thought Chinmoy Babu had held her hard in his decades back in the dusty evening when the lights went off during a meeting. He seemed not to be happy even after getting elected for the chief ministership. A few days after Aunty Roopwati's cremation. Chinmoy Babu was moving to the city, when his confideant showed him the place of cremation. Chinmoy Babu asked to halt the car as he wanted to spend some lone time as he had hectic days previously. Sometime after he went for the stroll. his confidant anticipated a shower, and stepped out to call him. But he was no where to be found. The confidant then climbed over the embankment and looked towards the cremation ground lying below and saw him near the ruins of the temple. He had gathered a bunch of flowers and was pruning them and then advanced towards the pile of. ashes- the last remains of Aunty's pyre. Kneeling down he placed his bouquet on the pile and sat quietly and wiped his eyes again and again. Then quietly Chinmoy Babu got into the car, which showed his care for Aunty. This fact also raises the question of the truth behind the Babu, former treasurer's confession that it was he and not Chinmoy who had been holding Aunty Roopwati's hand in the dark.
